Personal and collective security is a responsibility of individuals and the society. It takes individual and collective efforts to maintain both individual and collective safety. It is reasonable to expect a government to educate its people about safety measures and also to solicit help from them in combating crime and terrorism.
However, when the invisible and subtle border is crossed, a security threat becomes a means for a few to control the many. Please reference the quote above by George Orwell. It is for this reason that a few, namely those who govern, keep the many, namely the governed, in a state of fear. As long as the many are afraid, they willingly empower the few. The few seek the empowerment as it gives them access to privileges, material assets, and ultimately a greater freedom of choice. At the pretext of heading off danger and threats, the few can engage the many in attacking the innocent for the goal of plundering their natural resources.
So, when our governments remind us of security, is our security all they are having in mind?
